How to clean the debris filter on a washer

1:29

For front-load washer issues like UB errors, or if the door is not opening, the debris filter may be the culprit. Grab a bowl and cloth and let's get to work. The debris filter cover is located on the front of the washer, at the bottom. A thin item such as a plastic card, coin, or key may be required to open the cover. Once inside, unplug the emergency drain hose and drain any water into the bowl. Once that's complete, unscrew the filter itself by twisting to the left. Discard any trapped material in the filter and scrub it clean. Then, replace the filter and cap, as well as the emergency drain hose with its cap replaced. Once the machine is powered back on, the locking issues and error codes should be resolved. It's a good idea to clean your debris filter every two months to ensure optimal operation.
