How to properly sort and wash your laundry

4:49

Have you ever been pulling out your laundry from the washer only to find your favorite white pair of jeans are now pink, or perhaps your lovely blouse now has a giant tear? To avoid these unpleasant little surprises in the future, make sure you take the time to sort your laundry by color and fabric type before tossing it in the wash! When sorting by color, a good rule of thumb is to group your lights, mediums, and darks as deeper and more saturated colors can bleed. For fabric types, be sure to group your delicate items together and avoid washing them with heavier fabrics or items with lots of zippers to avoid damage. Separating by fabric types will also help when it comes time to dry your clothes as heavier items have a longer dry time than lighter fabrics. It’s also important to use the appropriate cycle for each load. Depending on your washer model, cycles may vary, but you’ll have the basic cycles like Normal, Delicates, Permanent Press, Bedding, etc. When washing your laundry, you want to also pay attention to the water temperature. Higher temperatures are best for whites, while colder water works better for deep colored items that may bleed. Depending on the cycle chosen, you may even be able to customize your soil level and spin time. Now, when your laundry is finished, make sure to remove it immediately and dry it right away.
